Explore Shanghai: Before Party Bites

Shanghai nightlife is essentially all about partying. And other self-created activities of whichever nature you choose of course. Eh hem. But if you want to head out somewhere that is still open after 10pm, clubs, bars, and pubs are the places to go. And the Bund, of course. More on that another time.

Before you rush into a club for some hardcore partying and hunting for that perfect prey to bring home (eeeewww...I never understood how anyone can just hook up with someone random at a club and do the dirty a few hours later...), to prevent you from getting too drunk and ending up waking up scaring the shit out of yourself to a fugly freak who has B.O, eat something first. Preferably something oily to coat your stomach so it doesn't soak up alcohol too quickly. Else just eat something. Drinks on an empty stomach is the surest way to get you sitting beside a (wet) public toilet bowl, puking all over yourself. And getting laid with someone you will regret and then despise yourself for the rest of your life. (I officially proclaim I don't know how to get that sentence structure accurate. Never mind. Moving on...)

Yongfu Lu/Fuxing Xi Lu is one of the many party streets in Shanghai, and is one flooded with this species we call expats, mainly whites. And a scary LOT of beggars who will grab your arm (I swear they are the most annoying kind. I'm not trying to be mean here, but nowhere else in the world do beggars touch you like that. Okay, except maybe India.) That aside, there is this cosy little food place called the Bikini Bar (which the bf likes, I wonder if it's for the cheekiness of the name or for the food >.< )

The body I think I want. Not that outfit. Though I think some of you wouldn't be opposed....

Phone camera plus front camera plus low light = grainy quality
But I still want to post cos I think I still look pretty *bu yao lian*

Remember when we were little and had glow-in-the-dark stickers for the ceiling?

There's just something oh-so-suggestive about bikinis and hot dogs...mmmmm~

Best picture I could do after colour-correction. But trust me. The sandwiches and hot dogs will leave you either wanting more, or very satisfied. *licks*

The Bikini Bar is located at
47 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu
(47永福路,近复兴西路)

Ad: Sg Bag Rental Classifieds

I'm having a bag-itch again. Happens once in a while. If I'm lucky, it's once a year. Else once every 4-6 months or so.

My latest purchase was a H&M weekend bag, and I'm glad I didn't break the bank for it. Hey, who is ever against saving money? 2nd hand but looks brand new? Give it to me, at less the usual price. That's what Sg Bag Rental is offering. They have new bags too, and of course, bags for rent. =)
If you have a bag that is similar to another bag you see on the site (maybe you bought a color you don't quite like after a while), you might even be able to swap it with someone else! That's something interesting!

Note: All pictures are taken by the individual sellers who are putting their bags up for sale. So that means you can too, and if pictures are well-taken, your bag stands a better chance of being sold. Naturally.

I scavenged and scoured the site for the best finds (in my opinion). And here they are, for the girls in us. I'm not going to cover the usual brands like LV, Gucci, Prada and the rest of the power-career-women brands, but they DO have it (loads!!!!), just check the site out if you're looking for them. (Or seriously, you can just check out their site and search for what you want.) We have our girly casual days and our power-packed career woman days, don't we? That's all part of the fun of being female. *wink* Here goes...

I can never resist a Juicy Couture item. Even though I only really own a Juicy sweater given to me by my dearest pretty aunt (Thank you!!!!) for my birthday last year...

And the little bags:

Limited Edition COACH Wristlets

I find wristlets very handy for the late night movie outings / suppers / heading downstairs to buy bread / walking the dog. Cos you can just loop them around your wrist and not really worry about them while they keep keys, phone, and money in place. And they hold keys really well. You can unbuckle the the strap and loop them around your handbag strap. So you never have to stand outside your door for 5 minutes searching in your daunting (aren't our bags all like that? Lol~) handbag for those damn keys....

Oh, speaking of going downstairs to run errands/dogwalking, here's another good find:

I've been recently on a VS craze, and have been stalking VS Angel Miranda Kerr like some pervert. Lol. I think she's absolutely gorgeous, plus she has heart throb Orlando Bloom as her husband. Tell me, what more can a girl want? And how else can I not look up to such an amazing goddess? Mirandaaaaaa~~~~

And since I'm on VS, I found quite a few VS items I think are pretty. And won't tear too big a hole in our pockets.

For THE girl in us...
Victoria's Secret Make-Up Pouch.

I LOVE THIS! (So gonna get it!) Why oh why isn't our VS store in Singapore bigger?????
Thank god for online shopping~~~

If you have a little more moolah to spare, you can check out Balenciaga too. Their bags have a casual weekend bag vibe which I really like.

Another brand which I dig is Loewe (pronounced Low-eh-weh. Nope. Not Loh-wee). This brand grew on me over time. Classy, yet not owned by too many people like LV or Gucci. It's quietly chic, at the same time with its own signature styles which distinguishes itself from other brands. I wrote about them in my previous SgBagRental advertorial. Not very cheap though, but a worthy investment. I would bring this bag to a meeting. Or a weekend getaway. Or even to the gym (okay maybe not cos my stinky shirts will stink up the bag). But it DOES look good as a work bag, no? =D

Loewe Amazona 28 in Gorgeous Lipstick Pink (the flashlight kinda obscured the color)

Loewe Amazona in purple suede. This really stands out.

They have plenty of classy designs and colours, in case you think they're all girly.
Loewe Amazona Maxi in Suede Leather
A unisex design so this one's for the boys too.

And the ultimate one I have my eyes on.... which I think is classy yet girly at the same time. This is a limited edition:

The Loewe 3-tone Amazona.
She is such a beauty...

So many bags, I'm going crazy fighting not to whip out the plastic card.

Upgrading In Progress

Myself, that is.

It kinda feels good being away from home. It makes me rethink what I take for granted, what truly matters to me, and I also think a lot about what I would do if I have nothing to lose.

Here in Shanghai, I truly felt it. That I have nothing to lose. That I have everything to give. That I want to do so much more for myself.

So it's mid-September. 9 months have passed. I have lived to this ripe young age. It's never too late to sit down and rethink and reaffirm my goals which I might have neglected or, god forbid, forgotten.

Here are the goals that I will be working on from now. And somehow, I feel really determined to get them. Maybe it's a mid-young-adulthood crisis, but then again, I've been making pretty good lemonade from what life has thrown me, and I'm in a good place with regards to my friendships, family, love life... My relationships are in a perfect state now, and I am thankful for the wonderful people in my life now. I know you guys are going to be with me a long long long long time, so thank you, in advance. ;)

1. Work on my body.

I'm currently pretty happy with how I look, and I just want to focus on being healthy and beautiful now. I learnt (what took me so long?) that being skinny doesn't necessarily equate to being beautiful. I want to be slim, toned, AND healthy. I want to be glowing from the inside out. Have great dewy skin all over. Poop regularly(sorry!) Work out. Have nice abs. A perky butt. Nice white teeth (sponsors for whitening anyone? Lol~) Sleep well. And have so much energy that I feel great facing what's ahead in each and every day.

We only have one body. Make it the best you can. I am starting right this moment.

2. Sing again.

I stopped for a really long time. I remember I used to sing 4 days a week. Sometimes even 5 if I have the home to myself. I'm a little shy that way even around people at home, much less strangers. I need to work on that - getting rid of those inhibitions, and sing, and make mistakes boldly, so that I can learn from them. My biggest obstacle is was fear. Which prevented me from trying, which then prevented me from getting better. Silly girl. Time to make mistakes like you were 17 again. ;)

3. Develop my career and grab opportunities with both hands.

I know this sounds kind of vague and abstract. And I think I kind of do that already, taking opportunities as they come. But I mean I want to do more. Like ask for help if I have to. Do my homework for every script I get. I used to tend to take roles for granted. But I realize how much more I can do, and how much better I might deliver, if I just put in more work. Hey, I'm already doing what I enjoy doing, so work doesn't really count as work anyway. What have I got to lose right?

The last 3 months of 2012, I am so going to own you for all you've got.

I've never felt so fired up in my life. Silver, go for it!

SSparkle Glam: Snail Secretions For the Face???

I'm not kidding. The first time I heard it I went "Eeeewwwww~~~~". But if the Japanese and Koreans are doing it, and knowing how crazy they are about beauty and youth-maintenance and all the kinds of strange sorcery they do for the sake of achieving immortal beauty, I had to try it for myself.

No, I was not about to place a snail on my face and direct it to creep and slide in wave-like peristaltic fashion across my face (gawd~~~eeewww a second time).

Thank god for pre packed masks. I wouldn't want to try DIY-ing this mask. Goodness knows what's in those secretions if I ever keep snails in a tank just to collect the slime... Alright alright...too graphic already, I know. =P

Apparently there are many benefit associated with snail secretions, namely from the Chilean Earth Snail, the most famous one being that it treats scars. Acne scars. Burn marks. Cuts. Holes in the face caused by acne in your teenage years. Sounds good? I think so!

Found a picture of a girl who used Elicina Snail Cream to improve her complexion:

And other pictures for various scars.

It all started with the Bascunan family, who reared snails for export for consumption in France. Escargot anyone?

It's always strange how they look so good like this but not when they are sliming across the floor.
The family, due to usage of many tools and nails while making snail cages, suffered many cuts and abrasions in the process. They found these cuts healed very quickly without infection, and that their hands were unusually soft. As in tender like a baby kinda soft. Not the dystrophic kind. Like tender goot goot kind. (Pardon my Singlish.) And the best part, they healed scar-free.

The wife of the family was curious what was in the secretions so she asked her son, a then medical undergraduate, Dr Fernando Bascunan Ygualt, to conduct an investigation. What he found changed their family's lives (and yours too if you have used it before) - that the secretions contained Allantoin, a natural cellular regenerator.

The family then got a lab in Chile to conduct a wide investigation on what else was in the secretion that made their hands so soft and scar-free. Collagen, Glycolic Acid, Elastin. These, for the beauty junkies, you know they are gooooood stuff for returning youth and tenacity to your skin.

So after 9 years of research, patenting, packaging, yada yada, Elicina Snail Cream was born.

Whoever knew snail slime was good for your skin eh?

Featured in already quite a few Singaporean magazines, namely Teenage (Feb 2012), Alexis (Jan 2012), Female (Nov 2011), Her World (Nov 2011), Simply Her, Cleo, Shape... This kid is definitely no stranger to our media. I'm slow...

Explore Shanghai: Shanghai Science & Technology Museum

I love museums. Always have. You must be thinking I'm some geek yeah?

In a way, I kinda am. I love reading, love staying at home, love playing video games (I've tried curbing myself from starting one and have weaned off Sims Social. Thank god or I'll NEVER get anything done! Lol~), love learning. And uh huh, I enjoy farm-visiting and going to museums.

August was the month of our nation's birthday, but I wasn't around enough to enjoy the free museum-admissions at home. I did, however, visit Shanghai's Science and Technology Museum, to well, try to make up for it. ^=^

My sister came back from Shanghai from a school trip and told me so much about this place that I HAD to come to see it for myself. *fingers crossed*

Admission goes for 60RMB per adult and 45RMB for students.
There are special rates for the elderly and "Soldiers on Activity Duty" and other categories of people I don't understand. Read more here.

Giraffes!!!! They always have that huge doe-eyed innocent look that we girls try to hard to imitate with make-up...

 Awwww~

Who would have known? If I'd seen it, I'll call it a wild pig. If one runs onto the highway and gets knocked down by a car, the papers would report it as a "wild boar". It's a peccary yo! Pig-like mammals but not pigs. Just like platypuses and ducks. Not. The Same.

I was browsing through pictures and was horrified to see this fat picture. OMG what happened in August!!! I think I've since lost the weight. I think? Lol.

Be prepared for the next amazing thing. Which I can't remember was what.

Reminds us of something?

I'm sure it was a DNA or something area. Nothing to do with human body genitalia. Though our minds just amazingly went there. Without need for direction. Oh the wonders of the human brain.

As good as this place may have been designed or built, I still prefer going to the zoo and seeing real life animals. Or maybe the London National Museum had me in awe more than this one. (That one was just AWESOME! If you ever go to London, pay that a visit. Admission is free.)

The day when robots take over. I hope it never comes.

Another phallic picture. The rocket supposedly has to go through that hole. Even though really, I don't see the purpose of the hole in the ceiling. Okay I don't know cos I've never seen rockets launch. Lalala~~`

I didn't think Chang E went to the moon because she was into space exploration. Nor did the people who wrote the mythology.

There were a lot of things to see, though should you really want information, I'd suggest google/wikipedia as a better source. Most information in the SSTM are brief, and when translated, might make you leave feeling very disturbed. I didn't really take pictures of the information scattered around the museum, but here's a sign:

I think a better translation might have been "Body And Health", and erm...."Exploration of Light"?

Worth a visit for the students. It is after all, a big museum, with many things to see. For the more sophisticated traveller looking for deeper knowledge and impressive presentation, this might slightly disappoint, especially if you've been to many museums worldwide. The iMax movies might be worth a visit though. =)
